Upper Extremity Prosthetics

When it comes to the client in need of upper extremity prosthetic care, the path ahead can be complex. Client’s needs vary greatly and expectations can shape how a prosthesis is designed.  Amputees with various levels of functional loss can expect to be treated with dignity, empathy and understanding while remaining part of the team approach. We strive to help each client individually reach their goals, engaging in discussion with all parties which can include the surgeon prior to amputation if needed, physiatrist, occupational therapist, physical therapists and family members.

Upper extremity prosthetics can include silicone cosmetic devices, myoelectric controlled battery powered components, conventional body powered devices and passive devices. When the client has suffered a loss of the upper extremity no matter what level, the right choices can have a significant effect on the out-come and we value the team approach to problem solving and using technology where appropriate to help each client reach their potential.

The heart of any prosthesis is the custom-made socket. This is the part which contains the client’s tissues allowing for the operation and control of the device. Being custom made allows for accommodation of unique physical variations specific to each amputee. If the custom fit is compromised the user will suffer poor operation of their new prosthesis. We take great care and pride in the fit of the custom prosthetic socket to maximize the potential of each client.

Upper extremity prosthetics can include such a vast array of components which allow the user to participate in a multitude of activities, social, hobby, athletic, vocational, and more, which can be explored together with the care team as goals are identified.
